Growing older as a gay man: the fear of losing yourself

Jun 26 / Rene Luisman

Growing older as a gay man can evoke anxiety and insecurity. In this article, you will read how body image, identity, and the desire for security intersect in this context.

When he thinks about getting older, there is an immediate unease in his body. He cannot imagine what his life as a gay man will look like as he ages. In his environment, he has few older role models to identify with. And he would very much like to form a picture of what awaits him.

To explore what the unease is about, we do a visualization exercise in which I ask him to imagine how he sees himself in five, ten, and fifteen years. As we move forward in time, the image becomes vaguer and the tension in his body increases. His legs become restless and he feels tension in his hands, without being able to pinpoint what this is about.

In a subsequent session, I show him photos of male bodies of different ages and conditions. With each image, I invite him to slow down and observe what is shifting in his body. To name what he objectively observes in the photo. And to then state which thoughts and beliefs each image evokes.

Some photos make him curious. He leans forward, admires what he sees, and muses on the path the man might have taken to get here. How someone is seemingly comfortable with a somewhat fuller body. And how he would love to help someone with a slender build become a bit more muscular. With other photos, he feels tension or aloofness. And sometimes he feels the urge to move away. I let him follow every impulse, so that he experiences time and again how his body reacts to it.

The images make it clear to him how he unconsciously makes a connection between self-worth, physical fitness, and happiness. As a child, he was slender and insecure. After years of intensive sports, he now derives security from the muscle mass he has developed. It defines a part of his identity, and the thought that this could fall away causes unease.

Slowly, more differentiation and awareness emerge between what he actually sees, how his body reacts to it, and what the underlying needs and fears are. How it relates to safety, independence, and security. As more clarity emerges regarding what he considers important in aging, there is also more inner peace.

Aging can be a charged process for gay men. The fear of loneliness, becoming dependent, or the loss of what currently provides you with security, might make you prefer to avoid this topic. At the same time, aging touches upon your identity and calls for a new relationship with yourself: with your body, your values, your relationships, and that which gives meaning. As a coach, I help you explore with care how you want to relate to yourself and others during this phase, and what is truly important to you in that regard.
