Seven patterns you want to change to become the person you want to be

Aug 19 / Rene Luisman
In this article, I share seven limiting patterns you might encounter as a gay man — and what you can do to break them so you can become the man you want to be.

Every person has desires. The need for recognition, security, love, or to belong somewhere. But sometimes you sabotage exactly what you long for most. Not because you don't know what you want, but because you are afraid of what will happen if you do what is necessary to fulfill your desire.

You long to be fully yourself and live freely,
But out of fear that your environment will not fully accept you,
You adapt or hide certain sides of yourself.

You long for equal love and reciprocity,
But out of fear of being difficult, demanding, or ‘too much’,
You put the other person’s interests first and ignore your own needs.

You long for peace and unconditional acceptance,
But because you doubt whether you are good enough,
You pretend to be bigger, stronger, or more successful.

You long for emotional connection and intimacy,
But when fear or shame overwhelms you,
You block and emotionally shut down.

You long for connection and someone who is there for you,
But because the lack of this makes you lonely and sad,
You comfort yourself with alcohol, sex, food, or shopping.

You want to be heard or seen,
But if you do not feel that connection,
You tend to blame the other person's behavior.

You want to be happy and live freely,
But because you feel ashamed or guilty,
You do not allow yourself to enjoy life to the fullest.

How you sabotage your own desire
What these patterns have in common is that they often root in your early childhood. To get what you longed for as a little boy, you unconsciously learned to adapt, walk on eggshells, or take on more responsibility than was actually appropriate for a child. It ensured that you were seen or that you felt safe. But behavior that once was functional, now prevents you from getting what you actually desire. It causes relationships to remain superficial or unequal, and forces you to constantly do your best to meet the other person's expectations.

To break this pattern, you must pass fear, shame, and insecurity. The fear of rejection, the shame of falling short, and the uncertainty of not knowing how the other person will react. But what we often forget in this process is that over the years, you have learned all kinds of skills that help you to handle this. You are no longer that helpless little boy who is dependent on his parents or caregivers. You are an adult man who can make his own choices, speak up and bear the consequences. Who is responsible for his own life and is allowed to take control of it.

That might look like this:

You long to be fully yourself and live freely,
So stay true to yourself, and look for people that support you for who you are.

You long for equal love and reciprocity,
So you take your own needs just as seriously as the needs of others.

You long for peace and unconditional acceptance,
So you are honest and open about your qualities and shortcomings.

You long for emotional connection and intimacy,
So you share your feelings, emotions, and needs with the other person.

You long for connection and someone who is there for you,
So you seek support when you feel lonely or sad.

You long to be heard or seen,
So you take the initiative to approach others and be curious.

You want to be happy and live freely,
So you allow yourself to have fun and express who you are.

You don't break patterns by judging yourself or others, but by learning to understand yourself better. The first step is awareness: recognizing when you react out of fear, shame, or protection instead of from your desire. After that, you can practice different behavior—being more honest, expressing your needs, seeking support, setting boundaries, and allowing yourself to be visible. In small, everyday situations, so that your confidence grows for moments that truly matter.

Change starts small, but every time you choose behavior that aligns with who you truly want to be, you get closer to the authenticity, love, and connection you long for.
